Turkmenistan, 1992-1997
The central Asian state of Turkmenistan became independent with the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1992.

The flag shows a waxing crescent as symbolof Islam and hope for a shining future and five stars representing the five provinces. The red bar near the hoist contains five carpet designs. Each one of them represents one of the five major tribes or houses of Turkmenistan.

in 1997 the flag was changed a bit, but today’s flag still looks quite similar.
